Cat® 120M2 and 12M2 Motor Graders Feature Low Emissions Engines, Added Customer Value and Operator Amenities

The newest motor graders from Caterpillar, the Cat® 120M2 and 12M2—with their all-wheel-drive (AWD) counterparts, the 120M2 AWD and 12M2 AWD—are equipped with low-emitting, fuel-efficient engines meeting Tier 4 Interim emission standards and are designed for a broad range of tasks, including heavy blade work, road  maintenance, snow removal and precision-finishing. The two new models join the 140M2/140M2 AWD and 160M2/160M2 AWD rolled out in early 2011 with features that boost production, trim operating costs, enhance operator convenience and simplify routine maintenance.

Clean, powerful engines

The new M Series 2 models are powered by Cat VHP (variable horsepower) engines with ACERT™ Technology and all have wider net-horsepower ranges than their M Series predecessors. The 120M2 and 120M2 AWD use the C7.1 ACERT engine, and the 12M2 and 12M2 AWD the C9.3 ACERT engine. Maximum net power ratings for the new models, respectively, are 189 horsepower (141 kW), 209 horsepower (156 kW), 223 horsepower (166 kW) and 243 horsepower (181 kW).

Variable Horsepower Plus (VHP Plus) is now standard on the full line-up of M Series 2 machine models, delivering additional horsepower in each forward gear 5th through 8th for more power at higher speeds. The system limits horsepower in lower gears, which helps reduce wheel slip where traction is limited. This optimizes rimpull in all gears by balancing traction, speed and horsepower while conserving fuel.

Both engines utilize the Cat NOx Reduction System and Caterpillar designed aftertreatment technologies to meet Tier 4 Interim emissions standards. The Cat Regeneration System is designed to work transparently, without any interaction needed from the operator. A soot level monitor can be viewed on the Cat Messenger screen and regeneration indicator lights are integrated into the front console.

12M2 updates, All Wheel Drive (AWD)

Customers have long recognized the value of the 12 motor grader. The 12M2 offers additional enhancements over the previous model with a longer wheelbase, a larger displacement engine, more power and torque and the addition of a 12M2 All Wheel Drive (AWD) model.

Operator amenities

The new M Series 2 models continue to feature Caterpillar’s hallmark control system, which uses two electronic joysticks to provide complete control of the machine, while reducing hand and wrist movement by nearly 80 percent, compared with conventional controls. The system’s intuitive design helps both new and experienced operators work more productively.

The new motor graders also feature electronic vertical adjustment of the joystick control pods, allowing operators to tailor joystick height for optimum control and comfort. The spacious M Series 2 cab, with standard air conditioning, uses angled doors and a patented sloping rear window to afford excellent visibility to the heel and toe of the moldboard and to the ripper.

Integrated Technologies

All M Series 2 models feature the new Cat Grade Control Cross Slope system.  Cat Grade Control is a complete machine control and guidance system which is fully integrated with standard machine components at the factory.  This optional factory-installed and calibrated cross slope system provides automatic cross slope control capability, ready to operate from the moment it leaves the factory.  In addition, Cat Cross Slope is fully upgradeable and compatible with AccuGrade systems to grow with customers.

In addition to Cat Cross Slope, the M Series 2 motor graders will also continue to offer the AccuGrade Ready Option which provides all the mounting hardware, controls and harnesses for easy installation of all AccuGrade kits.

Motor grader users can also utilize Cat Product Link, which allows remote monitoring of equipment to improve overall fleet-management effectiveness. Product Link is deeply integrated into machine systems. Events and diagnostic codes, as well as hours, fuel, idle time and other detailed information are transmitted to a secure web based application, VisionLink™. VisionLink includes powerful tools to convey information to users and dealers, including mapping, working and idle time, fuel level and more.

Caterpillar Announces Five New Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB Technology Industrial Engines

Caterpillar Inc. recently announced the introduction of five new Cat Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB Technology Industrial engines. The models are identified as C13 ACERT, C15 ACERT, C18 ACERT, C27 ACERT and C32 ACERT.  The new engines range from 385 -1200 bhp and provide a seamless horsepower range, broad product choices and powerful advantages for Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) of agricultural, construction, mining, forestry and general industrial markets.  All engines are also available with an extensive choice of options ideally suited to meet OEM and end customer requirements across a wide range of heavy duty applications.

These Cat engines continue the legacy of durability, reliability, maximum fuel efficiency, low cost of ownership and World Class support provided by the Cat dealer network.

Cat industrial engines, which cover the 175-750 hp-range, are equipped with a robust, fully integrated Cat Clean Emissions Module (CEM) and the Cat NOx Reduction System (NRS). The new package has been extensively tested to provide OEMs with the optimum flexibility for cleaner, more efficient, reliable Cat power. As with all Cat ACERT Tier 4 Interim technology engines, ACERT Technologies are the key enablers to achieve a significant 50% reduction of Particulate Matter (PM) and a 45% reduction of Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx).

The new C13 ACERT is a 12.5 liter displacement engine and delivers 385-475 bhp (287-354 bkW). It develops exceptional

performance with high torque capability of up to 1604 lb-ft (2171 Nm) and is well suited for agricultural combines and rock crushers. It is electronically controlled and features a dependable mechanically actuated electronic fuel injection (MEUI) system and asymmetric turbocharger.

The new C15 ACERT is a 15.2 liter displacement engine and delivers 475-580 bhp (354-433 bkW) and provides improved lower end power density compared to the Tier 3/Stage IIIA configuration.  This engine has outstanding torque up to 1958 lb-ft (2655 Nm) to power OEM equipment in the most extreme operating conditions and is used extensively in rock drills, hydraulic power units, and other industrial applications.

The new C18 ACERT is an 18.1 liter displacement engine that delivers 600-765 bhp (448-571 bkW).  Depending on power requirements, a single asymmetric or series turbocharger is utilized which maximizes performance. The C18 ACERT is an ideal choice for air compressors, cold planers, trenchers and agricultural applications.  Power density for the 765 bhp rating has been significantly increased over the Tier 3/Stage IIIA model and does not require aftertreatment.

The new C15 ACERT and C18 ACERT are built on a common core platform and share similar physical dimensions. This offers

significant value to OEM’s and can lower installation costs for machines by providing multiple power options across a very wide (475 – 765 HP) power range.

The new C27 ACERT is a 27 liter 800-1050 bhp engine and is easily integrated into OEM equipment powered by the Cat Tier 2 configuration or competitive offering.  It produces maximum torque of up to 3539 lb-ft and is well suited for biomass grinders, rock drills, heavy duty pumps and other industrial applications.  It features side mounted asymmetric turbochargers and a dependable next generation mechanically actuated electronic fuel injection (MEUI) system.  It is electronically controlled and delivers world-class performance and fuel economy.

The new C32 ACERT is a 32.1 liter displacement engine producing 950-1200 bhp.  The new platform is equipped with side mounted asymmetric turbochargers and is the ideal choice for biomass grinders and rock drills.

Built on a common core platform, the C27 ACERT and C32 ACERT offer OEMs additional flexibility by providing multiple power options (800 – 1200 bhp) from identical base engines. The C27 ACERT and C32 ACERT for industrial applications will not require aftertreatment to achieve Tier 4 Interim emissions.

The addition of these five engines completes the introduction of the Cat Industrial Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB line.  With over twenty Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB industrial engines, Cat again provides a full range of power solutions from 10-1200 bhp for global OEM applications.
