NEW CAT® D6 DEBUTS WORLD’S FIRST HIGH DRIVE ELECTRIC DRIVE DOZER

TOP GRADING PERFORMANCE, FUEL EFFICIENCY GAINS

The all-new Cat® D6 dozer delivers new levels of efficiency and performance with a choice of Electric Drive or Fully Automatic power train. A redesigned purpose-built VPAT dozer offers best-in-class grading, while updated technology features help operators to be more productive from first pass to finish grade. Customer profitability is enhanced with up to 35% better fuel efficiency and reduced service and maintenance costs. An all-new cab resets the standard in comfort, while a range of configuration choices helps customers optimize machine performance for business needs.  At 215 hp (161 kW) and an operating weight range of 47,949 – 53,126 lbs (21 749 – 24 097 kg), the new D6 replaces the versatile D6T bulldozer.

Advanced Power Train Choice

This next-generation dozer offers a choice of advanced powertrain: the D6 XE with Electric Drive or the D6 with a fully automatic 4-speed powershift transmission.

The D6 XE is the world’s first high drive Electric Drive dozer, offering up to 35% better fuel efficiency and increased agility compared to the previous 3-speed model D6T. Constant power to the ground, continuous push, and greater maneuverability mean faster cycle times, making Electric Drive a top choice to achieve the highest level of productivity and fuel efficiency. Added D6 XE productivity and reduced fuel cost mean customers looking for these benefits can expect to see a payback of the added investment over a D6 in less than two years.1

The D6 XE features a next-generation Electric Drive system that offers high performance along with added durability. Simplified diagnostics and the serviceability advantages of a high drive dozer help reduce service and maintenance costs.

The D6 is powered by a 4-speed fully automatic transmission that provides increased productivity and up to 20% better fuel efficiency versus its 3-speed predecessor. The fully automatic D6 reduces momentary hesitation when the traditional machine shifts, so more momentum, and drawbar power are maintained through the entire push. Caterpillar engineers designed the auto shift to work up and down the entire working range, so power to the ground and fuel consumption are optimized for a greater percentage of the time. An added gear between first and second ensures more seamless shifting.

Both powertrains offer unprecedented ease of operation. The operator simply sets the ground speed and the dozer continuously optimizes for maximum power and efficiency based on load. With Electric Drive, there are no gears to shift. The fully automatic 4-speed powertrain optimizes the transmission without the operator having to worry about shifting.

Better, Faster Grading

Finish jobs faster by grading at higher speeds with a new purpose-built Variable Power Angle Tilt (VPAT) dozer. The newly designed structure is stronger, yet lighter, so machine balance is optimized for grading without the need for a rear implement or counterweight. A wide-gauge LGP VPAT design, with 36” centered shoes, puts more track on the ground to achieve 5 psi (0.73 kPa) ground pressure. Wider VPAT blade and class-leading range of motion improve performance, especially in trenching and backfilling applications. A new optional finish grading undercarriage has 10 bottom rollers for smoother grades at higher speeds, even in difficult surfaces like sand and gravel.

Technology Choices for Your Business

Increase overall job site productivity by up to 50 percent with a choice of Cat Connect GRADE technologies. Technologies range from standard Slope Indicate to full factory-integrated GPS, all supported by Caterpillar and Cat dealers.

  • Technology offerings on the D6/D6 XE are led by an updated, factory integrated Cat GRADE with 3D system. The new 10-inch touch screen offers a more intuitive operator interface that works like a smartphone, making it easy for operators to pick up quickly. The system uses advanced Inertial Measuring Units (IMU), which provide greater speed and accuracy without position sensing cylinders. Smaller antennas are integrated into the cab roof for even better protection. AutoCarry™ is included with Grade with 3D to automate blade lift to maintain desired blade load, improving load consistency and reducing track slip.

Additional GRADE technology choices include:

  • Cat Slope Indicate is standard, showing the machine cross-slope and fore/aft orientation on the primary monitor for quick and easy reference.
  • Cat GRADE with Slope Assist™ provides basic blade positioning assistance without the need for added hardware or a GPS signal.
  • Factory Attachment Ready Option (ARO) provides optimal mounting locations, brackets, and hardware and simplifies installation of an aftermarket grade control system. The new D6/D6 XE makes it easier to install any brand of grade control system, with specific mounting locations for grade control components. The position of the main display and grade control display can be swapped so operators can choose their preferred location.

Cat LINK telematics technology helps take the complexity out of managing job sites – by gathering data generated by equipment, materials, and people – and serving it up in customizable formats.

Greater Durability, Reduced Service and Maintenance Costs

The new D6/D6 XE is designed specifically to reduce service and maintenance costs by up to 12 percent, with updated components, longer service intervals, and fewer scheduled maintenance tasks. Easy access to grouped service points and regular maintenance items, plus a new ladder at the back of the machine, help reduce time spent on routine maintenance and inspection.

Undercarriage updates are designed to save money and maximize service life. A new Heavy Duty Extended Life undercarriage features Positive Pin Retention pins and link improvements for up to 20% more seal life in high impact conditions. Common structures for Heavy Duty and SystemOne™ undercarriage enable changes from one to the other.

A new Cat C9.3B diesel engine has a redesigned fuel system that provides greater durability and more accurate fuel delivery. Elimination of the NOx Reduction System and a simplified single engine Electronic Control Module (ECM) help increase reliability.

New Standard in Cab Comfort

A completely redesigned cab raises the standard in comfort and productivity. A brand new 10-inch touchscreen display provides an easy-to-use operator interface. The standard air suspension seat is wider with added backward adjustment, plus the entire armrest adjusts independently of the seat for customized comfort. Heated/cooled leather seat options are available, and all offer a variety of seat adjustments to customize cushion length, headrest position, lumbar support and seat tilt. More storage spaces have been added throughout the cab.

The new dozers are easy to operate too – with Electric Drive or the Fully Automatic powertrain, operators just need to set the ground speed and go. The machine optimizes performance and efficiency with no added shifting required. Agile turning, especially on the D6 XE, means faster cycle times and more able to work in smaller spaces.

Distributed cab heating/cooling, with automatic temperature and blower control, circulates air more effectively around the operator. Less air directed toward windows helps reduce fogging/frosting. Integrated ROPS and 15% more overall glass area help increase visibility.

Equipped for the Job

The D6/D6 XE is available in VPAT or push-arm configurations with standard or two widths of Low Ground Pressure (LGP) undercarriage. A variety of blade types, track shoe widths and rear attachments enable the machine to be optimized for primary types of work to be done. Waste Handling and Forestry arrangements also are available, equipped from the factory with specialized guarding, seals and other features to help ensure long life in harsh applications.

New Electric Drive Caterpillar 988K XE Wheel Loader

New Electric Drive Cat® 988K XE Wheel Loader Offers Higher Fuel Efficiency And Lower Total Cost Of Ownership

Electric drive loader delivers 25% greater overall efficiency and up to 10% more productivity in load-and-carry applications than the industry leader 988K loader

The new Cat® 988K XE is the first wheel loader offered by Caterpillar with a high-efficiency electric drive system. This new large wheel loader joins the industry leader 988K and the recently launched 986K wheel loaders to provide customers with the most cost-effective loader for each application. Delivering high-production in all loading applications, the 988K XE is recommended for demanding job sites where fuel efficiency makes a difference in the machine’s total cost of operation.

The new loader features switched reluctance (SR) technology and leverages more than 15 years of Cat electric drive experience and more than 4 years of stringent testing in a range of applications for proven reliability in the field. The field proven and tested C18 ACERT™ engine, mechanical dropbox, driveline and axles from the 988K remain in the electric drive machine for consistent, trouble-free operation.

Maximum Efficiency & Productivity

Offering increased truck loading and load-and-carry efficiency, the new 988K XE increases efficiency by 25% overall and by up to 49% in face-loading applications, as compared to the 988K. This reduces costs and helps operations reduce greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprint. At the same time, Caterpillar production studies report the new loader delivers up to 10% higher productivity in load-and-carry applications.

The new Cat 988K XE loader offers a range of bucket capacities from 6.2-17 yd3 (4.7-13 m3). Rated standard and high lift payload for the loader reaches 12.5 tons (11.3 tonnes) when working with face material and 16 tons (14.5 tonnes) with loose material. Advansys™ Series Ground Engaging Tools (GET) protect bucket components and reduce operating costs, so operations can get the most out of machine performance.

The standard 988K XE wheel loader is performance matched to offer efficient 3-pass loading of the 42.6-ton (38.6-tonne) Cat 770G and 4-pass loading of the 51-ton (46.3-tonne) Cat 772. Its high-lift configuration delivers 5-pass loading of the 61-ton (55.3-tonne) Cat 773G and 6-pass loading of the 70.5-ton (64-tonne) Cat 775G.

Extended Service, Lower Ownership Costs

Cat electric drive technology found in the new 988K XE lowers overall maintenance costs, while increasing engine life expectancy. Offering extended oil change intervals of 2,000 hours, the electric drive wheel loader uses 40% less powertrain oil.

The durable SR drive motor, generator and inverter are built to last through the second engine life with minimum maintenance. Additionally, the efficient electric drive design increases engine life by up to 3,500 hours, extending time between powertrain rebuilds.

To assist with electric drive rebuilds, Caterpillar offers customers world-class service training material, backed by industry-leading customer support from the extensive Cat dealer network. Remanufactured drive motors, generators and inverters will also be available to reduce rebuild cost.

Similar Operation, Greater Productivity

Slight changes inside the cab of the new 988K XE provide operators with the familiar functions and feel of the 988K. At the same time, operators will experience improved handling smoothness and ease of operation. The new loader offers a single speed range, so the machine efficiently operates without the need for gear shifting. New virtual gears help to control machine ground speed and deliver smooth direction shifts.

The standard Cat Product Link™ offers remote data monitoring through VisionLink®, so key personnel can stay informed of critical machine operating data.  Fuel usage, payload summaries, scheduled service reminders, fault code alerts and various productivity reports are available to help improve machine management.  Additionally, the onboard Vital Information Management System (VIMS) provides the operator with operating data such as real-time fuel consumption and fuel efficiency via an interactive touch screen display.

The new Cat 988K XE loader is equipped with a host of technology solutions to increase operating efficiency and machine uptime. Cat Production Measurement (CPM) brings payload weighing to the cab, so operators can work more productively and deliver accurate loads with confidence. CPM offers advanced weighing modes, which assist with payload accuracy and increase loading cycle speed.

Optional Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is a fully integrated Cat feature, which enables operators to monitor tire inflation. Available through the VIMS display, the operator can quickly view each tire’s pressure and take action when needed to reduce wear and increase service life.

As customers have come to expect from the 988K, operators safely access via left- or right-hand stairs built at a reduced 45-degree angle and maintain three points of contact at all times. The STIC steer armrest easily folds up, allowing the operator to quickly enter the cab. Isolation cab mounts and an air-suspension seat reduce vibration transmitted to the operator for increased comfort, while the enclosed pressurized structure reduces operator sound levels. The automatic, in-cab temperature control system maintains operator comfort even in extreme temperatures.

Komatsu America Commemorates The 930th Production Of Its Model 930E Haul Truck

Komatsu America Corp. commemorated the production of the 930th unit of its Ultra Class 930E Electric Drive Truck. The celebration took place at its Peoria Manufacturing Operation and included an address from Vice President and General Manager, Rod Schrader in addition to a photo shoot for employees.

Introduced in 1996, the 930E is the best selling ultra class mining truck in the world. Currently, there are fleets of 930s located in North America, South America, Africa, Asia and Australia.

Komatsu designs and builds the 930E electric drive truck in Peoria where union craftsmen assemble and test the final product before shipping it around the world.  The factory has a long history of innovation, and built its first electric drive mining truck in 1967.  Those early trucks were limited to 120-ton capacity and would be dwarfed by today’s modern trucks that are equipped with state-of-the-art satellite diagnostic systems for remote monitoring.

“The 930E represents Komatsu’s genuine passion to see our customers succeed,” said Don Lindell, product manager for Mining Trucks.  “We continue refining the features of the truck to lower operating cost per ton based on data from real world performance.”

Collahuasi, a 14-year customer of Komatsu with over 40 trucks at one site, will be receiving unit number 930 when it is shipped from the Komatsu factory in Peoria.  Located in the mountains of northern Chile, Collahuasi is one of the largest copper resources in the world; boasting upwards of five billion tons.

The 930E is used as a part of Komatsu’s Autonomous Haulage System that allows the trucks to operate without drivers.  Because of its technology and reliability, the 930E is often used for remote and difficult applications.

The 930E has a payload capacity of 320 tons. Depending on the model, it is available with 2,700 or 3,500 horsepower diesel engine connected to an AC electric drive system.  The total weight carried by the six 12’ high tires is 1,106,670 lbs.
