Three new impact wrenches are ideal for automotive, heavy equipment, and utility install/repair work
When we think about battery-powered tools we don’t have a problem accepting drills, hammer drills, some hand-held saws but “kinda” hesitate when we think about impact wrenches. Personally I always thought that the only way to go with an impact wrench was pneumatic. I do have an electric powered impact wrench but it doesn’t get used too often.
DEWALT recently introduces three new 20V MAX* Brushless High Torque Impact Wrenches. The impact wrenches are available in 1/2 Inch (DCF899) hog ring or detent pin anvils, 3/4 Inch (DCF898) hog ring with retention pin hole anvil and a 7/16 Inch (DCF897) quick release chuck specifically designed for utility applications.
These high-torque impact wrenches feature efficient, brushless motors and with the 5Ah 20V MAX* XR lithium ion battery pack they deliver the power, speed, and extreme runtime required by the professional. The 1/2 Inch (DCF899) hog ring or detent pin anvil impact wrench delivers 700 ft-lbs of max torque and 1200 ft-lbs of max breakaway torque.
The DCF 899, with its brushless motor delivers power. I had to remove lug nuts on a vehicle that has been sitting for a long time and dreaded the task. It seemed like the perfect opportunity to “test drive” the new DeWalt tool. I was sure I was going to have to resort to using my old extension bar on a lug wrench, break a few knuckles and bless the project with some choice verbiage to get the job done.
The impact wrench fells good when you pick it up. The good-sized grip is designed to fit your hand putting the trigger finger in the right spot for easy on and off. It’s balanced; not clumsy to hold. You don’t have to fight the weight or strain to keep it in the ready-to-use position. Actually it felt like it had been custom made for me – not.
The first surprise came when I squeezed the trigger and the brushless motor “purred” quietly while quickly twisting off the first lug nut, and the second and the third and the fourth and the fifth repeating this exercise three more times and then, and then reversing the process and putting the 20 lug nuts back on each wheel – no drag, no sag no lag.
I reached a conclusion; I wasn’t going to run this wrench down. There was more than enough battery power to see me through the day. I’m sure that some jobs would challenge the battery but not many. Needless to say, the DCF 899 has become my impact wrench of choice; no more electric impact wrench with its cumbersome cord; no more pneumatic impact wrench with its bothersome hose.
