According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, Bureau of Transportation Statistics, in 2007 there were 599,766 bridges in the country; 72,520 are structurally deficient with 12,951 in urban applications and 59,569 in rural use; 79,804 are functionally obsolete. Of those, 33,139 are urban and 46,665 are rural.
